Managing MCS
Healthy pregnancy possible?
with William J. Rea, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.E.M.

Environmental Health

Dear Dr. Rea,
Would you advise those with chemical sensitivity not to plan on having children? What has pregnancy been like for those with chemical sensitivity—have they produced healthy babies? How long should one sauna and use other detox methods before conception? Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Dr. Rea’s response:
Those with chemical sensitivity can have children. Women with chemical sensitivity have done well with pregnancy and have had healthy babies. Problems with detox pathways and allergies can be inherited. However, if problems are suspected, preventive measures can be taken.

Blood testing should determine the length of detoxification. When heavy metals and chemicals are undetected in blood or tissue, then conception can occur. Sauna should not exceed 30 minutes a day and should be accomplished under the case of a physician. However, time in the sauna should be individualized to fit the chemical metabolism and detoxification ability of the patient and the type of sauna heater. Proper supplementation must always accompany detoxification.
