Managing MCS
Porphyria and mast cell disorders

Environmental Health

Dear Dr. Rea,
What role do porphyria and mast cell disorders play in EI? My new insurance-covered doctor said that whenever someone sneezes, they have a mast cell disorder and that it is a catchall diagnosis. He told me I don’t have porphyria just by looking at me. He said it was a very rare condition and I didn’t have it (with no testing). I’d like to know just how important it is to pursue testing for these two conditions, if there are specific treatments available that could help allay the symptoms of chemical sensitivity once those conditions were treated, or if they are inconsequential in the long run.

Dr. Rea’s response:
Porphyria is actually a stage in detoxification and the role it plays in environmental illness is minimal to none. Those with symptoms may want to be screened for porphyria. However, mast cell disorders play a large role in chemical injury and it would be worthwhile for most suffering from EI to be tested for mast cell dissociation, as there MAY BE treatments available that might be helpful in managing symptoms or even resolving the condition completely.
