Managing MCS
Sun sensitivity

Environmental Health

Dear Dr. Rea,
I recently became sun sensitive after coming to Florida for the winter. Now when I am in the sun for an hour I get severe migraines that night. Even small exposures cause a rash on my cheeks, my bottom lip to show a purplish discoloration, and an increased sensitivity to chemicals and electrical later that night. I now use sunblock, Solumbra hats and clothing and stay in the shade. But even with those precautions I don’t seem to be able to completely avoid exposure. I guess the sun reflects off the ground. Is there anything specific that can be done to reduce sun sensitivity? Could it have anything to do with vitamin D metabolism? Thanks so much.

Dr. Rea’s response:
You need to measure the vitamin D. Some environmental specialists have a sun vaccine. Also, antioxidants like vitamin C, glutathione, vitamin E & A may help.
