Managing MCS
Hospital toxins

Environmental Health

Dear Dr. Rea,
I was recently hospitalized and, when I began to grow increasingly ill from chemicals in the hospital, requested to be discharged. I tried to explain to my family member who was there with me that people with MCS can die from exposures to chemicals in hospitals, and she said she did not believe me. So my question to you is: have you had patients die of exposures to chemicals in hospitals? If not, is this a possibility and what would be the cause of death? (i.e. organ failure). I think this would be important information for organizations trying to make hospitals safer for those with environmental illness. Thank you!

Dr. Rea’s response:
Yes, you are right, chemically sensitive patients can – and do – die in hospitals from exposure to chemicals but it is always blamed on organ failure or recurrent infection, particularly pneumonia. Hospitals are also a breeding ground for superbugs that can cause serious infection and/or death.
