Does a healthy person have to take probiotics every day?
HHI’s response:
Probiotics are a natural part of the digestive and intestinal system and account for about three pounds in a healthy person. These healthy bacteria help to manufacture and direct the immune system in its critical role as a protector. Each person must be looked at individually when considering probiotic usage. The most important thing is to tailor the type to the need. Next, quantity is established when considering this concern. When one is healthy, it’s our general rule to suggest probiotics every other day. You must be cautious in determining whether or not you are healthy. This does not mean the absence of a diagnosis. It means a fully functional body, including a healthy digestive system and a full range of healthy bacteria.
[Editor's note: see the Health Care resource section on Planet Thrive for a list of recommended probiotics, including food-based probiotics like fermented vegetables, nut yogurt and seed cheeses.]

Great answer to a complex question! I’ve often been asked the same thing…are probiotics necessary for everyone, even if they feel good? I feel that a lot of us have harmed our vital internal bacterial colonies through lifestyle factors, antibiotics, even stress. We may not know that our microflora balance is out of whack because the body can manifest this in confusing ways that may not seem directly related to digestion. I like your suggestion, an every other day approach with an increase during and after antibiotic use (if absolutely necessary) or for an extra boost before travel, etc.
