I once thought I could not tolerate wool, but in transitioning away from synthetic materials in clothing and bedding I found I could gradually tolerate rougher and rougher wools. I started with "baby" wools, lambs wools and wools with high lanolin content. I also started with silk or cotton layers between my skin and the wool. After two years I can now tolerate even very rough wools against my bare skin for varying periods of time. Good luck to all in finding the most appropriate materials for each self!

Dear healthy bed seekers,

I have found in my 26 years of prototyping and making beds that very few people have any kind of reaction to our wool bedding. In fact, the opposite is true. We often hear back from people who have had great improvement in their quality of sleep and sense of wellbeing when sleeping on wool. If you think you may have trouble with wool, call Shepherd's Dream for a sample of any of the materials that are used in the bedding. They also have samples of the felts that are used in the layered bed.

Your woolyness,
Eliana Jantz

This artical is very intresting1 I like how they are using the scraps to make the balls (No waste) thats a good thing! :) Unfortunatly some of us are allergic to wool. It makes my skin feel like it is biting and pinching me terribly, quite painfull with a rash. If I could do wool I might be warmer like with a coat or blanket, even a bed! Thanks for sharing this artical. Very good for those that can do wool....

Hi Evelyn,
Unfortunately, I'm afraid that the wool felts are costly too...at $225 a pop, if you layer them it will add up quickly. Maybe in comparison to a real wool mattress it is a lot cheaper though. I am starting to wonder if it would be more cost effective to buy the animal and shear it yourself...for never ending wool products. Half joking and half serious....;-)

thanks for this article. i like this idea even better than a premade (and very costly) wool bed. i'm getting excited about the possibility of one day having a bed!!!
