Monique van den BroekMonique van den Broek started the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Nederland group on Facebook this June and began tirelessly campaigning for thousands with MCS to flood the Oprah Winfrey Show with our MCS stories on July 4th weekend. Monique hopes to encourage Oprah to do a show on MCS and bring much needed attention to the dangers of chemicals in everyday life.

It would be great if some people writing letters would tie in MCS to the BP oil spill workers getting sick with MCS (some news reports are calling it TILT – toxicant induced loss of tolerance) during the clean up. This has gotten recent media attention and could be a great reason for Oprah to do a show on MCS right now, while it’s an issue for the BP oil spill workers.

  2. earthwalker

FYI, there is a 2,000 character limit on posts to the Oprah Winfrey show.

  3. earthwalker

Here is the letter I submitted:

It’s time for Oprah to do a show on chemical sensitivity! With over 35 million people suffering from MCS worldwide, this is an important issue to bring to public attention as it is a preventable illness. Now, with many of the BP oil spill workers getting sick with MCS (also known as TILT), it’s the perfect time to focus on the cause and prevention of this devastating illness that has destroyed the health, lives and families of too many already.

Chemical sensitivity can be associated with autism, lyme disease, chemical injury, mold illness, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, mercury poisoning, and myalgic encephalomyelitis.

What can begin as a fragrance sensitivity or intolerance of cigarette smoke can quickly spread to include many different materials and substances, making it nearly impossible for sufferers to continue working and living in their homes. Families have been torn apart, careers lost, friendships abandoned, and people have been deserted by their communities.

We expect many, many more people to develop MCS as the BP oil spill continues to wreak ecological damage to coastal communities. Please use your voice to warn workers to use respirator masks if involved in the clean up and to warn locals not to go to the beaches or stay in an area where they can smell the oil. You have the power to prevent thousands more from developing this very devastating and debilitating condition.

    Sent to Oprah 7/3/10

It is time, past time, to rein in the chemical assaults suffered by people, animals, the planet. With the Gulf Spill, we are likely to have an explosion of new cases of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) deriving from the increased exposures. We have to shift the burden of proof from “prove it’s dangerous” to “prove it’s safe” and the prime protection from corporate economic welfare to the health and safety of we, the people.

I developed MCS in 1991 from occupational exposure to chemicals from petroleum and new carpeting. In addition to health, I lost personal freedom, friends, family, and the ability to support myself. I had to invest huge amounts of energy, time and money in making my home safe, in finding safe products for every facet of my life, in trying different health modalities which promised to relieve symptoms of the condition and stop its progress, in building a new life and replacing loss with positives. This had to be done despite the self-serving skepticism, falsifications and road-blocks erected by the medical-insurance establishment. Although I am significantly improved, I have found I must continue to walk a tightrope of awareness and avoidance of fragrances, petroleum based products, pesticides, tobacco, and some other chemicals. All facets of my life are interwoven with my need to avoid the ubiquitous chemicals that I am unable to detoxify.

And, I am one of the lucky ones. I have improved, have a safe place to live, and was able to develop a new, satisfying, productive life (although still close to poverty level). Many folks who develop MCS continue to live isolated and in pain, rejected by their friends/family/former employers, sleeping in cars to avoid indoor contaminants, suffering ever-increasing auto-immune and other health conditions exacerbated by the continual inflammation and stress of MCS. Although the science to understand the condition is just coming into its own (Martin Pall’s work, especially: http://www.thetenthparadigm.org), vested interests fight to control information and keep MCS labeled as a psychiatric problem of hysterical women — where have we heard that before?

I fervently hope you will explore this topic in a show, avoiding the temptation to exhibit MCS sufferers who also suffer psychiatric conditions as this exploitation plays into the hands of those who want to keep this very real condition labelled as imaginary. There are plenty of good credible spokespersons to choose from. Links to many such sources can be found at such sites as planetthrive.com, chemicalinjury.net.

Thank you for your consideration and hoped-for help in shedding light on this increasingly common, devastating condition.

Just a quick addendum to above: Oprah’s site very strictly limits characters to 2000. When Word’s count was giving me below 2000 characters (even counting spaces), Oprah’s site was still rejecting my submission as too long. I had to heavily edit the above to get it through.

  6. earthwalker

Karen, great letter and thanks for posting it here. I had the same issue with mine in terms of character limit. I had to reduce the length even when Word was telling me I was under 2000 characters including spaces.

  7. Charo

OK -Enviado el correo el 3/7 desde Albacete, España, gracias al google traslate…
    Good Idea!
I hope good heath for all the people.

    Muchas gracias Charo!!! xx

  9. bettybetts

    Hi all,

I agree with you 10,000% that Oprah should do a show on MCS. I hope it happens and its done responsibly. One of her sponsers, Dove soap, uses synthetic fragrance and other problem chemicals in its products. This is probably why she hasn’t done a show about MCS so far, even though she’s been asked.

If we were to advise Oprah on how to do this program, which special guest experts should be on the show?

  10. earthwalker

    Hey Bettybetts,
Good question! It would be great if these experts could be on the Oprah show:

    William J. Rea, MD
    Grace Ziem, MD
    Doris Rapp, MD
    Martin Pall, PhD
    Magda Havas, PhD
    Anne Steinemann, PhD
    Pamela Reed-Gibson, PhD

    Who else?

  11. bettybetts

Other possibilities: Dr. Sherry Rogers, John and Cynthia Wilson from the Chemical Injury Information Network, Debra Lynn Dadd, Dr. Claudia Miller and Nicholas Ashford, whose groundbraking book is now available free on the Internet. Dr. Miller was recently quoted in an article about the Gulf oil spill and chemical injury.

If Oprah doesn’t do the program, I think Dr. Sanjay Gupta would be an excellent choice since he just did the special on Toxic America. I also think his credibility is very good.

  12. Carrie

I just went to the site and posted my own tale of woe. I hope we get the critical mass of emails we need to get her producers’ attention.

  13. Jim Ott

it was frustrating to keep it under 2000 characters, but my story has been sent. hopefully everyone here on Thrive (& thousands more)will let Oprah know we are out here.

  14. Connie Pitts

My story has also been sent, along with my URL. I too hope thousands of people will write. It doesn’t take very long.

  15. Ruth

I sent mine off to her as soon as I heard about this…
great idea, and I hope this communal effort spurs her into doing a show! What I just thought of is that Oprah, in her years of interviewing people, and knowing as many people as she does, would surely have met some MCSers, so I will be that she knows about it and hasn’t
moved on it for some reason…that sponsor thing may be why.
