There’s such a huge choice of supplements and so many recommendations it makes your head spin (not to mention what it does to your wallet). The deal is that if you find something that may work to alleviate a health issue then it really is worth looking into if it’ll work for you. Supplements like B complex or B12 actually help people (like me) to feel more energized even though doctors (like mine) say it won’t do anything if you don’t have an absorption problem (pernicious anemia). Although my doctor says it won’t help me, it actually does so I take it.
There’s a huge link between CFS and viral illnesses like herpes. Herpes is an enormous drain for one on your immune system. So if there’s a supplement that “may” help lessen or prevent outbreaks it’s worth checking in to. Monolaurin is something that’s being talked about to use for that purpose, even Dr. Andrew Weil suggests trying it.
He says,
Monolaurin is a nontoxic, antiviral supplement made from lauric acid (a fatty acid found in breast milk) and glycerin. It is used to treat infections with all strains of the herpes virus along with other viral infections including measles, and HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. Monolaurin is believed to have the potential to permanently inactivate the fat coated viruses that cause these diseases by fluidizing the lipids (fats) and phospholipids in their envelopes, leading to the disintegration of viral particles.”
Monolaurin supplements should be taken everyday, not just during flare-ups to suppress outbreaks (it’s not going to actually cure herpes).

It’s a lot cheaper from Vitacost than iHerb.

Thanks Bluebird52, but I can’t find the 600mg Monolaurin on Vitacost. Be careful when comparing prices that you are actually comparing apples to apples. The Monolaurin Vitacost is selling from Ecological Formulas is 300mg – half the potency – and is indeed cheaper than buying the 600mg bottle linked to above, just below the article. This is what I found on Vitacost: http://www.vitacost.com/Cardiovascular-Research-Monolaurin If you have a link to the 600mg bottle please share it here. Thanks!!

Nadine, do you know what the preferred dosage is to take daily? Should people be taking 300mg or 600mg daily?

To treat herpes virus, recommended dose: take up to 1800mg of Monolaurin when there is a flare-up and 600mg as a maintenance dose. You can also take Laurisine which has both the monolaurin and L-lysine, they are both recommended for herpes virus.

Thanks for the dosage info Nadine. Laurisine looks interesting but it only has 200mg of Lauric Acid, a precursor to Monolaurin. Not sure how the dosage of Lauric Acid should compare to your recommended dose of 600mg Monolaurin. It seems to me that it would be more price effective to take the 600mg Monolaurin and get a separate bottle of L-Lysine??

Why not take the real thing? Coconut oil, milk and meat? Lauric acid occurs naturally in two places, coconut and mother’s milk.

Good point Joan! I wonder how much coconut one would have to eat daily. Do you know what forms of coconut have the most monolaurin – coconut milk, coconut meat, coconut butter, coconut oil, coconut water?

Good points, Joan and earthwalker. We blend the meat and water from young coconuts. When the coconuts come cold out of the fridge, the drink is cold and rich. The taste is fantastic. It’s loaded with minerals and healthy fats. We feel really good after we drink it. Here in Costa Rica, coconuts are less expensive. In the states, they can be harder to find, but much less expensive than doctor bills!

Alkaline water provides an antioxidant and electron rich medium for consumption, and the acidic water provides oxidizing water that works like an antibacterial and cleanser for external use.

I’ve read that people who get herpes should not eat coconut, though, because it is high in arginine, which can aggravate herpes & bring on an outbreak.

Buyer beware. Not all Monolaurin is created equal. Don’t be tricked thinking cheaper is better. You get what you pay for folks. Lauricidin remains the purest form available, where other cheaper brands use fillers, which means you are paying for a bunch of junk, which really means you’re not even getting what you thought you paid for. Also an important note is… Dr Andrew Weil, only recommends the original, specifically Dr Kabara’s LAURICIDIN brand, not any other brands.
