with Stephen Harrod Buhner, master herbalist
Does everyone have to have herxheimer reactions as a sign that bacteria is dying and treatment is working? If you don’t react, does it mean what you’re doing isn’t working? I’ve been taking herbs now to treat the infections and feel fine. I hear/read about so many people having herxheimers. Are herxes variable person to person? My findings show herxheimers to be intensely incapacitating to a lot of people…can they be as mild as itchy joints, fatigue, and crankiness?
Stephen’s response:
Not everyone has herx reactions, so don’t worry about it.

The “answer” regarding herxing was absolutely terrible! Don’t worry about it? What the hell kind of answer is that?! This person asked other questions and they Wern’t addressed at all. I have read a lot on this site and I definitely think that Stephen is only on this site to sell herbs, vitamins, etc because he gets reimbursed for every sale made by his links to these companies! Why else would he only put a certain place or two to get them from? To top it off, he puts a one sentence answer to a question he should have at least put a link to, for other places to find more information, especially since he did such a poor job in answering the question! After every “answer” there’s a list of places to buy Things from, along with a list of his books that he puts out to make even more money! I would not trust this man at all!

Dear lymie2long,
Stephen Buhner has no financial affiliation with this site and he does not sell herbs, nor does he profit from the selling of herbs through any of the recommended links listed under his column. The recommended herbs listed are taken from Stephen’s book Healing Lyme and/or direct communications with him via email and put into a list format here to help people find things easily. You are free to find any of the recommended brands listed anywhere you choose to purchase them. The majority of them are direct links to companies that neither Stephen Buhner nor Planet Thrive makes commissions on.
Planet Thrive does make a very small commission on books posted under Stephen’s column when purchased through Amazon to help us cover our overhead.
Stephen has tirelessly answered hundreds of questions via this site for several years now without financial compensation. As far as I have experienced working with him on this column, he is a man of the highest integrity. I have never known another busy professional to give so much time and effort answering member questions without compensation, so consistently, and for so long.
Stephen’s brief answer to this question may sound flippant taken out of context, but if you read the question carefully, the person is asking if they should be worried if they do not experience a herx on his protocol. His answer is no, no need to worry because not everyone herxes. I don’t see how that is a horrible answer. He is trying to allay any anxiety the person feels about this.
Yes, he could have addressed every single point the person asked about. But please keep in mind that Stephen answers ~15-20 member questions every single month. He has a very busy work/teaching/travel schedule and I imagine that sometimes he has more energy to give to responses than others.
If someone wants a more detailed answer, they are free to contact him directly via his website and/or try to set up a paid consultation.
