Mast cell disease and MCS – are they related?

Dear Dr. Rea,
My daughter has Ehlers-Danlos, POTS, Chiari malformation and now what is diagnosed as mast cell activation disease with a normal tryptase. She is reactive to smells, foods, drugs, etc. How are mast cell disease and MCS related, or do they overlap?

Dr. Rea’s response:
MCS reactions usually trigger the mast cell response. Your daughter should be neutralized for histamine. If you do not have anyone local we do offer this through the Environmental Health Center-Dallas.
