how we poison ourselves daily
It seems that most people are too myopically immersed in the details of their own lives to fully understand the extent of the current environmental crisis. Global warming has become the “cause du jour,” but our environmental problems go much deeper than that. From the construction of dams that have irreversibly impacted native wildlife populations and clear-cutting practices that have devastated our forests worldwide, to off-shore dumping (have you heard of the “plastic island” twice the size of Texas floating off the Pacific?) and suburban sprawl—which has contributed to the epidemic growth of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease—our species has managed to pollute its own food sources and decimate biodiversity in a relatively short span of about 200 years.
At Planet Thrive, we aim to provide resources that enable our members to make important connections between human behavior, environmental destruction, and public health. Reading about all this devastation can be very depressing. One author who knows how to bring hope to the situation is Stephen Harrod Buhner, who has written several books on the intelligence of plants and their mostly untapped potential to heal humans as well as the world. We encourage you to face the destruction head-on, but then to embrace the healing potential that already exists in the world and move forward with full faith that our planet can be restored.
