Sparkle's essay on clothing
wednesday january 30th, 2008 7:14PM
Trophy SUPERB essay, Sparkle. I'm passing it on to the all my MCS friends in the Backcountry. Bicycling is critical to my mental, physical and financial health. Unfortunately, I have to wear synthetic bicycle clothing in cold weather; it's the most activity-specific for its wind-blocking, sweat-wicking and heat retention properties, and of course the shorts and tights give 4-way stretch, so Levis wouldn't work anyway. Luckily I can tolerate the polyester OK. One tip I wanted to pass along - When it's hot, (it gets REAL hot here, up to 115 degrees in the summer, although 100-105 is average) I wear big, baggy, raw silk Hawaiian shirts I get at Amvets. I soak them with water and wring out most of it about 5 minutes before starting my ride. The evaporation produces a cooling effect so pronounced that it's like riding in a swamp cooler, and I just spritz water on my back and front as I ride to keep it moist. Last summer I soaked a shirt and put on right away, and I got so chilled (at 95 degrees!) that I had to take it off to let it dry off enough so I could try again a few minutes later. I use silk handkerchiefs on my scalp also. It's great for any hot weather activity - gardening, washing the car, etc. I know that for a lot of people with health issues, heat tolerance can be diminished, so I hope this helps someone. Peace and health to you all, Gregory

i worked on films in nyc from '89-91, for about a year and a half. my first gig was as scenic artist for basketcase 2, a B movie cult flick. i also worked on maniac cop 2. the rest were music videos, commercials, psas, etc. i had a blast!! but didn't make enough $$ to stay in it...
