Eleuthero dosage clarification

by | Jul 18, 2012 | dosage info, eleutherococcus, Herbs, SLEEP, Symptoms, The Basics | 8 comments

Dear Stephen,
I have found conflicting directions for the eleuthero tincture. On one page of this site it says to take 1/2 to 1 tsp on rising and lunch. On another page it says to take 1 tsp 3 x day for 30 to 60 days and then stop for 2 weeks. Can you please clarify the best way to take it?
Stephen’s response:
Some people experience insomnia if they take that last bit at night before bed, hence its absence in that one listing. I am, these days, more partial to rhodiola long term than the eleuthro as it is less stimulating and rarely causes wakefulness. Sorry for the confusion.

Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.

Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.

He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

I am new to Lyme and its co-infections so have been reading your books. I’ve seen eleuthero tincture mentioned a number of times as part of the core protocol, but have just come across this post. I was planning to order eleuthero, but should I instead order rhodiola? If so, do I get a tincture or tablets and what is the best source? Finally, what is the dosage?

    Thank you Stephen!
I have been taking cat’s claw, Japanese knot weeds, Eleuthero in powdered form 3 times a day for almost 3 years with Ozone therapy.
I have been buy it from 1st Chinese herbs and steep in hot water for 10 minutes.
I haven’t seen really much progress. I still get herx everyday. Is it about time to try something else?
I make my own burdock, hottuynia, reosh, red root tincturs and take it with protocol.

Interesting. I’ve experienced the complete opposite. I do well with Eleuthero but had an exacerbation in insomnia as well as cardiac arrhythmia with the rhodiola.

Hi whomstevers still maintaining this site, this post appears to have been hacked, or at least not fixed if the site was hacked in the past. Under Stephen’s reply are 2 unscrupulous hyperlinks… Might be worth searching the whole database for parts of those urls to see if theyre on other posts. If you need someone with php experience to help maintain the site I volunteer in the name of Buhner.

Thank you so much. I am one of the veterans of Lyme, having survived it now for twenty years come august. My 19 yo got it from me in utero. Though I have lost much due to years of unknowledgeable doctors, specially my ability to run…. On n on. I had a llmd who advised in my last pregnancy that taking and would protect newborn from Lyme, but now am suspecting that my 6 yo who is presenting with same issues that my 19 year old presented at this age got it anyway: manifesting as what looks like rage attacks and ADHD. So. After 17 years I finally found llmd put me on buhner protocol. Now seeking same for my little one. Glad this website still exists. Thank you. Can I just sprinkle child good with my buhner herb protocol capsules now? Omg, I cannot believe I am here again and still the med establishment is so far behind. Any advice or re direction will help.

just to follow up: trekked to brattleboro to purchase liquid buhner core protocol. son hated just a little bit! but then with calm talking i gave him a single adult capsule and he downed it very easily! have a med appointment with a lyme literate pediatric neuropsych ND starting on Monday. Already, just that one capsule, i can already sense my son’s thinking is a little less overwhelmed or on fire, as i had once experienced, and i witnessed my older daughter experience. bought buhner’s 2nd ed Healing Lyme. It is so thick filled with tons of info! so i will do 7 days of this or whatever is advised by the ND. Thank you all if you read this far.

Similar for me–my body prefers eleuthero to rhodiola. But I’m able to take both. When I’m pausing eleuthero I take care not to overdo rhodiola. Rhodiola can exacerbate muscle tension, general tension and sleeplessness. I’ve not experienced any of those with eleuthero. HOWEVER, sometimes I seem to herx for a day or two when I restart eleuthero after a 2-week pause. Worse when I started taking it, but that was 2 years ago and voila! I feel the herx again today. I believe I have chronic Lyme, Bartonella and Mycoplasma. No positive Western blot tests, choosing treatment over spending money on other tests.
