Dear Stephen,
I have been doing the core protocol for about 10 months with good results. I recently added the astragalus as a preventive measure and had some unpleasant side effects which made me think that I probably have chronic lyme. If that is the case, is there an alternative for those who reside in endemic areas?
About a month later (and after stopping the astragalus), I started with the eleutheroccus tincture. Almost immediately (within hours), it lifted my depression but after a few days, I started with all over hurting (joints, muscles, stiff neck, etc.). Is it possible that it over stimulated my immune system? I continued to take the eleuthero for a few weeks and have been off it for about 10 days with no decrease in the inflammation. I also feel as though I got reinfected and this may have been coincidental to the eleuthero. I am very sensitive to foods, supplements, etc. but had no problem with the core protocol. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Stephen’s response:
I would immediately add teasel tincture. Begin with 3 drops 3x daily and then, if your symptoms do not resolve in three or four days, increase to 10 drops, and so on until your symptoms resolve. Once you are feeling better I would suggest you use a 1:5 eleutherococcus tincture and see how that works for you, 10-30 drops 3x daily. It is much easier on the system and is more of a long term tonic. The side effects you mention I have never heard of in relation to taking eleutherococcus so I don’t really know what to say about what generated them.

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

this sounds familiar to me, too… i’ve been taking the core protocol of japanese knot wood + cat’s claw for 2.5 months (not astragalus, as i’ve got chronic lyme), then just 2 weeks ago added the eleuthero tincture. i’ve been very noticeably more achy and fatigued since. in fact, this last Friday evening + most of the day + night on Saturday were spent sleeping + w/increased pain…

  2. Jared

Michele, perhaps it has something to do with the alcohol or the glycerine in the tincture.

  3. Andrew

I have a similar issue right now; I can’t tell if its the eleuthero or the andrographis… So I’m eliminating andrographis to start…

Hello, very new to this. I have recently been diagnosed with Lyme and co-infections. I’m taking Doxycycline bid ( on the 3rd month), Just started Lions Maine bid capsules,Knotweed tid capsule,Vitamin c, Milk thistle Cat’s claw capsule qd, Echinacia with Goldenseal qd along with B-complex qd. I still feel bad. Is there anything else you could recommend? I had Lyme for a year prior to being diagnosed.

Hello Fred, Thank you for your response. I’m coming out of where Lyme has put me. It has been a very ruff road and will continue to be a long struggle. I have recently ordered Sarsaparilla and Serrapeptase to add to my regimen. I live in Florida, the Physicians here are not educated on Lyme. The abx listed above, are those to be taken back to back? Do you recommend oral use of these components? I am trying to rebuild what I have lost to this disease, being on IV abx all day for a month would be troublesome for me. My symptoms apart from fatigue is all Neuro. I am looking into adding Rhodiola Rosea along with Siberian Ginseng as well. The teas, what are there benefits?

Did you receive my other response?

I have also recently ordered Stephen’s book as well. Hopefully, relief will come soon. This is a nightmare.

Thank you Fred, are you a Physician?

Good morning Fred. How long do you suggest the Minocycline to be used for. I’m scheduled to see the Infectious Disease doctor in a couple of weeks. At that point I would have completed the 3 month course of Doxy.

  10. Rhonda Carpenter

Also, do you think I should combine Minocycline with another abx? Thank you for all of your advise. I really appreciate it.

  11. Rhonda Carpenter

Hello Fred, I am also picking up Monolaurin today as well. I will have Sarsparilla, Serrapeptase, Rhodiola Rosea, Siberian Ginseng along with Barberry delivered next week. I am questioning a reparable online herbal company. Will try this out for 6-8 months along with Minocycline. Wish me luck :)

Good morning Fred. Book came in, YAY. Thank you for all of your advise, I really appreciate it. Hope your day is amazing. Thanks again :)

I love his book. Learning ALOT about this disease. I now have hope. Thanks to everyone who is helping with this war.

  14. Fred

It is very important to eat big green olives very day, they are very good for Lyme and also to eat salty and spicy dishes. Parasites and bacteria hate salt and pungy spices. For Lyme you can eat raw red onions (quercertin), red grapes (resveratrol) and navel oranges (vitamin C). First start treating (killing) babesia, bartonella, mycoplasma and borrelia, and after that CMV and EBV. To increase your vitamin D3 you can eat mushrooms and black chocolate.

Good morning Fred. This is my weapon= Doxy, Lions Maine,Knotweed, vitamin c, Milk Thistle, Cat’s Claw, Echinacea w/Goldenseal, B-Complex, Monolarin, Taurine, Tryptophan, L-Caratine, Bacopa Monniera, Yellow duck. Going to start today: Sarsaparilla, Serrapeptase ,Rhodiola Rosea , barbery and Siberian Ginseng. Waiting on Scutellaria Baicalensis, Salvia Miltiorrhiza,Kuza and Eleutherococcus. I am taking them daily as I am not sure if I should start one group at a time. You mentioned CMV and EBV. Please specify the meaning?

  16. rhonda carpenter

Also, thank you for your feedback as well :)

  17. rhonda carpenter

Also taking probiotic, magnesium, zinc and calcium.

  18. rhonda carpenter

Actually Fred, what are your thoughts on a good Cytokine Remodulator? Scutellaria Baicalensis/Salvia Miltiorrhiza have some controversy surrounding them.

  19. Fred

    CMV = Cytomegalovirus
    EBV = Epstein-Barr virus
Quite often you can be infected with nasty viruses or you can be carrier without severe symptoms, depending on your immune status.

  20. Rhonda Carpenter

Good morning, I have an I.D. appointment tomorrow. Is there an antibiotic that will treat all forms of lyme you can suggest?

  21. Fred

    Rhonda,
No need to take calcium and magnesium, you need good probiotics and zinc only. Way too different vitamins and herbs at the same time is not recommended. Thyme infusion is quite good and high dosage of vitamin C.

  22. Rhonda Carpenter

Thanks Fred. I’ll take out calcium and magnesium. I seen I.D. She is recommending Pennicillin VK tid.

I am having a lot of issues finding a LLMD in Florida. I have called several Universities, which whom will only refer me to I.D. Which I am already seeing without success. Any insight?

  24. Fred

No need of LLMD or GP, need to educate yourself, otherwise it is almost impossible to gain control over the infections. First start to find what kind of symptoms you have and based on symptoms you can narrow down what kind of infection(s) you have in your body. It can be bacterial, fungal, viral, protozoa, parasite infections. You can have multi infections at the same time. It can be Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, Mycoplasma, Echrlichia, Chlamidophila, Chlamydia, Anaplasma, EBV, CMV, Strep, Staph, etc. depending on the infection you need abx treatment with different abx, the best are Penicillin V, Amoxicillin, Azithromycin, Rifampin, Ciprofloxacin, Clarithromycin, Minocycline.

You are absolutely right, I did have one co-infection that I know of . It was Ehrlichia. Doxycycline eradicated that one. Thank God.

  29. Rhonda Carpenter

Hello, I recently had a mammogram. Does anyone know if Lyme can show up in the lymph system on imaging?

  30. monella

hellos had 3 months of antibiotics claritromithin+ minociclin , then i did 2 month of Buhner protocol for borrelia. but i still have same persisting symthoms : inner tremor in my legs, muscle twitching, permanent noice in my head, head aches, muscle pain. i have borrelia, weak positive bartonella, weak positive babesia. what should i add for my sympthoms?

  31. healing lyme admin

You might try adding in the herbs Buhner recommends for Babesia (a Sida acuta, Alchornea cordifolia, and Cryptolepis sanguinolenta blend). Or you can just try the Sida acuta tincture, which is recommended for both Babesia and Bartonella. Please refer to his books on these infections for the complete protocols.

  32. Fred

For Bartonella the curative protocol is Bactrim + Azithromycin. Quite often it is extremely difficult to cure chronic Bartonella, thus treatment should start asap, when the infection is not fully disseminated. For Babesia Ciprofloxacin 3x250mg/day for 10 days is curative.

  33. Fred

Cipro is not so dangereous, it is quite curative instead and a life saver. Should be used for a short time, 10 days maximum.

  34. Fred

    Hi monella,
First you should start treating Babesia, after that Bartonella and later Borrelia.
For Babesia, Ciprofloxacin is very good. For Bartonella, Azithromycin + Bactrim. For Borrelia Amoxicillin is quite good and if you have neuroLyme Minocycline is even better.
You should kill the Borrelia cystic forms + Borrelia biofilm using fresh garlic, oregano and clove buds, otherwise you cannot cure Borrelia, you must kill the cystic forms + biofilms.

  35. Rhonda

Fred is correct. I work in the medical field. A lot of our patients are prescribed cipro short term without any issues.

  36. Rhonda Carpenter

Hello, I have been in treatment now since January. I still have a significant amount of pain in my head. Any suggestions.

  37. Fred

    hi Rhonda,
The pain in the head is from infections, probably Bartonella, Borrelia, or both, it can be Babesia too. Bart and Borr can easily enter into the brain, causing inflammation. Do you have pain in the eyes, heart, ears? Antibiotic drug Minocycline is for Borrelia and Ciprofloxacin for Bartonella. One of the best abx for Bartonella is Rifampin. You need intracellular abx and BBB abx to enter the brain tissue and kill the nasty bugs. Not treated the infections can become chronic and some cognitive issues can arise, like brain fog, lack of memory, mental issues, brain tumors, etc.

  38. rhonda carpenter

Thank you Fred. I always appreciate your feed back. I have been on treatment now since January. Eyes don’t hurt as bad, and pressure still in my ears from time to time. The head pain is always there, just not as intense at times. Jan-March I was on doxy. Penicillin k for 2weeks. I have also been on herbs for 4 months now. I just can’t wait till this part is over.

    Hi Rhonda
In your endless list of herbs/spices, I do not see:
    1) Raw Garlic,
    2) Thyme,
    3) Oil of Oregano,
    4) Cinnamon.
You need these things in order to kill Borrelia, Babesia and Bartonella with success. Also without Ciprofloxacin 3x250mg/day for 10 days you cannot see big improvements. Cipro is one of the best intracellular abx and is the best gram-negative bactericidal abx. First you need to kill babesia, after that bartonella and later borrelia.

  40. rhonda carpenter

Fred, thank you. I will incorporate those 4 in my regiment, I will also talk to pcp about cipro as well. Tested negative for babesia. Thank you again Fred.

In the meantime, the essential oils, are they administered the same as tinctures?

  42. Rhonda

Hello everyone, has anyone heard of PEMF,OZONE therapy along with Hyper Sauna for Lyme treatment?

  43. rhonda carpenter

Thank you Fred, you are always helpful. I have actually come across Antabuse for lyme. Have you heard anything on it yet. I find this to hopeful, to say the least

  44. Chris

Thanks for stating as much… “this is a nightmare,’ because I feel the same way. Its unbelievable at times… my life has majorly changed. Thank God for these forums. I no longer feel all alone. Great advise as well.

I’m taking Astragalus, Cat’s Claw, Japanese Knotweed, Isatis, and a Lyme tincture of said mentioned and Red Root.

Rcently, I’ve added Serrapeteese and * Interface Plus* from Amazon. Its working fast on the myco with positive noticeable changes. It eats at the biofilm’s sugar releasing pandora’s box, but only briefly. Keeping the immune system up with NAC and herbal tinctures.

Foods to sway away from: Sugars, Soy, GMOs, gluten’s, wheat and grains.

Hope this helps. I’m suffering from Mycoplasma, Candida and its all connected seemingly to the lymph glands and ear canals. If anyone can add to this, I’d greatly appreciate it

  45. Stacy

I tried it for several weeks, then had to stop. It made my muscles very weak and twitchy and increased the fatigue I always have. I can usually be up, though not on my feet through the day. On Antabuse I was sleeping most afternoons. After about a month it gave me the worst Herx of my life with an intense headache that lasted 3 days. I took Percoset for the pain and got nausea and vomiting. I had more minor neck and head pain for weeks after. It has a long half life. I’ve been off of it over a month now and finally feeling “normal” again. I lost the bit of improvement in fitness I’d gotten from swimming twice a week in the summer.
The Herx tells me it was working at killing the bugs, but the experience was an ordeal and I don’t feel better now than before taking Antabuse. There’s also a nationwide shortage of it so I couldn’t get anymore if I wanted to.

  46. Rhonda Carpenter

So sorry to hear this Stacy. I know how hard the struggle is . I’ve recently seen a Holistic Health Provider. I have undergone one IV infusion of Myers cocktail along with glutathione. I requested a low dose to see how my body would react. It actually helped. I’m going for another infusion tomorrow.
