I have had lyme for 3 years. I started your core protocol about 6 weeks ago and have been adding in your expanded protocol as well for my specific issues. I was wondering what herbs/supplements you would recommend I take for collagen and arthritic support. Do I need to take each product mentioned in your book for each of these issues? I feel that I have lyme in my left side…hip, knee and ankle. Thank you for your reply and thank you for being so gracious all these years and responding to these emails.
Teasel, glucosamine sulfate, biosil, vitamin c, pregnenolone.

Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.
Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.
He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.
Hi Stephen,
Which book of yours goes into the collagen replacement protocol, please?
Thanks so much and God Bless you and your efforts,
Tricia
Hi, the new revised ‘Healing Lyme’ does.
I’m confused, can u take collagen r not?
Are there tests to diagnose? Why is collagen needed? How is this affected?
Why is the new edition not qavailable for kindle?
I’m sorry but I don’t know the answer to that. Best, Julie (site owner)
Collagen to replinish and support the collagen for the skin and joints. The lyme disease can effect collagen integrity and structure. There is no specific test to look for this, to my knowledge. Just things to take as support with the herbal protocol.
Hi Stephen,
I was bit 20 years ago and had a bulls eye rash on my leg and did not treat because doctors kept telling me it’s all in my head. As I later came to discover I have late stage Lyme and wondering what would you recommend for someone who has serious damage due to Lyme and possible coinfections. I have a 3 cm benign brain tumor, arthritis in knees, hips and shoulders. I am extremely fatigued, brain swelling and brain fog. Vision is blurry and have lots floaters. I also have heart palpitations and chest pains.
I am desperate am willing try any strong herbs that will make me feel better!
Thank you in advance!

Hi Christina. I want to share a couple of things that really helped my daughter, in case they also help you. I took her to our regional pediatric hospital for a bulls eye rash when she was 8; convinced it wasn’t lyme because we supposedly didn’t have lyme in our area. That was 6 years ago. We just received the clinical diagnosis of Lyme in September; she also tested positive for bartonella antibodies (Columbia University Lyme Research Center – Second Opinion Clinic).
Along with herbal/antibiotic treatment, a couple of REALLY key things have made a big difference for her:
(1) we are now a paleo/auto-immune paleo household – a low-inflammation diet helps our girl a lot; inflammatory foods kept her brain on fire – her MANY neuro symptoms included auditory and visual hallucinations.
(2) we discovered the infection caused severe Irlen Syndrome – neurovisual dsyfunction that led to double vision, blurred vision, floaters, headaches, pseudo seizures and more. She wears filtered glasses now and it calmed her brain tremendously – truly a life-changer. I wish we could get those 6 years back with these filters! It’s expensive but worth every penny and then some. You can buy some cheap color overlays online to see if they help when you look at print. If yes, I’d check out Irlen online and find a screener/diagnostician.
Stephen Buhner’s books on both lyme and bartonella are treasures. The combination of diet, reduced stress, Buhner protocol and antibiotics have made a huge difference. Best wishes to you!
Hi Susan. Just wondered who prescribed the Buhner treatment and antibiotics – was it the Columbia center? Would you recommend going there for a second opinion? And we are in the NYC area so who did you see for Irlen lenses thanks!
