Dear Stephen,
I got bit by a tick in April, 2011 and my foot and arm went completely numb; I knew right at the moment something was wrong. I got the 30 days of doxycycline but I was also studying abroad during that time in Europe so after I finished the doxy I thought I would be okay. I had drank a good amount of alcohol, and thought everything was fine even though I was getting persistent symptoms I thought they would gradually wear off. I came back to the U.S. and had severe depersonalization, permanent drunkness feeling, and cognitive abilities had dwindled tremendously so it automatically made me piece together that what happened is I had relapsed. I’m on lycopodium right now but should I really be getting artemisinin or cryptolepis. I’m 20 and I really want to prevent any further damage. I feel as though there’s alread been a lot of collateral damage, I want to tie loose ends and regain myself more than ever. Please help!
Stephen’s response:
The use of knotweed root is very important in chronic lyme, it is the one thing that will reduce inflammation in every area the lyme bacteria affect. Dosage as in book. We would highly suggest the use of
Sida acuta, 1-2 droppers full of the tincture, 3-4x daily, available from
woodlandessence.com or [email protected], rather than the crypto or the artemisinin at this time. Cat’s claw, dosage as in book, is crucial as well. To help counteract the cognitive problems, please try L-arginine 500 mg capsules or caplets, use 1000-2000 mg daily in 3-4 divided doses; EGCG 1 capsule with food per day (400 mg or so capsules); phosphatidyl choline 420mg (gel caps) 3x day. This should help a lot.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have active herpes, chicken pox, or shingles DO NOT USE L-arginine.

Stephen Harrod Buhner was an Earth poet and an award-winning author of twenty-four books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine including the acclaimed book Healing Lyme: Natural Healing & Prevention of Lyme Borreliosis & Its Co-infections.
Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.
Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.
He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

I came down with a very high fever and rash in 1991. My doctor at that time tested me for Lyme, however, it came back negative. I thought I had the flu at first, but with the strange rash, my doctor said, not flu. We never found out anything.
That was 27 years ago. All these years I have been treated for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue with mainly pain meds, some physical therapy and other things I cannot remember.
The best help came from a doctor in Houston who started me on Glutathione ATP injections.
Also, I lost my left kidney in 1999 due to a benign oncocytoma (tumor the size of a softball). I think this tumor was because of all the Ibuprofen and aspirin I had been taking for 6 years. Just my opinion!
Now I took Doxycycline for about 30 days but after lab test, my liver and kidney were not happy. I hope I haven’t started a negative reaction in either organ. That remains to be seen.
I wrote you a few minutes ago, then thought of some things you probably should know about me. I am 72 yrs old. I told you what I thought was pertinent history since 1991. My concern that I didnt ask you about is what the herbs, etc might do to my liver, one remaining kidney and other organs? I dont have many left. My gallbladder was taken out 2004. My thyroid was taken out in 1973 because of Graves Disease. I was in my 20s.
If there is anything else you need to know, please just ask.
