Dear Stephen,
I was wondering if you have to space out cryptolepis when taking probiotics. I just realized I’ve been taking it within an hour of my probiotic and I’m not sure if it kills the good bacteria. Also, I just started cryptolepis a few weeks ago and I’m up to one and a half teaspoons daily, working up to three teaspoons daily as that’s the dose my doctor said to take. Is this the typical dosage – is it okay to take this amount?
Stephen’s response:
No, you don’t have to space them out. That is a good amount to take for difficult to treat infections. I usually don’t recommend it that high for longer than 90 days. The herb is very safe and people in Africa take it long term, in lower doses, for years.

Stephen Harrod Buhner was an Earth poet and an award-winning author of twenty-four books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine including the acclaimed book Healing Lyme: Natural Healing & Prevention of Lyme Borreliosis & Its Co-infections.
Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.
Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.
He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

Dear Stephen, I have been fighting mycobacterium avium and other mycobacterium infections for approximately 10 years, along with bronchiectasis from the repeated infections. For the past 3 years my doctor has had me on ethambutol, azithromycin and rifampin. I stopped taking them a few months ago and for a month I used cryptolepsis and bala, a teaspoon three times a day, along with 1/3 tsp. Each licorice, rhodiola and lomatium 3x a day. I have not used them now for a few weeks, but planned to start again for another round. I have not seen much reduction in the amount of mucus I cough up, but have not had to return to the antibiotics either. Do you think this is a good combination for me and how long would you recommend my using them? Thank you so much as I have not been able to find a lot of information specific to my issues.
If you find an answer to this question. I would be interested as I’m dealing with the same issue.
I am also dealing with the same issue. I have been looking for a natural way to treat this issue. I do not want antibiotics, since I got C-Diff from taking antibiotics for an ear infection in March of this year.
I totally sympathize with the other 2 ladies dealing with this situation.
I have a urinary tracks infection. I had one about four or five yrs. ago and was given antibiotics over and over because the ones the doctor was giving me didn’t work. I gave up and found out about cryptolepis. I trashed the antibiotics and after taking the cryptolepis for a couple of weeks (not sure exactly how long) and it went away. This time I started the cryptolepis regimen with away – didn’t go to some M.D. and just kept taking the cryptolepis. I think it’s gone or almost gone. Is there something synergistic I could get next time which will make the crypto. work faster?
Jan, you may want to look into D-Mannose.
Can cryptolepis be taken with doxycycline for treatment of lyme? Must it be spaced apart from the doxy and if yes, how many hours?
can i give cryptolepis to a 2 year old who has been struggling with a lingering cold for weeks, and was given 2 rounds of antibiotics?
