Scutellaria tincture vs powdered

by | Dec 16, 2016 | Herbs, miscellaneous | 6 comments

Dear Stephen,
How does the powdered form of scutellaria compare to tincture? What dosage of the powdered herb will be comparable to 1/2 teaspoon of tincture? My goal is to minimize alcohol.
Stephen’s response:
No clue. I am not a fan of using this in capsules. I don’t think it is as strong or as effective. Most of the data I have reviewed comes from China which mostly utilizes teas and powders. If you want to use powders, I talk about that in depth in the Herbal Antivirals book; however, my suggestion is to use 1 tsp of the powder 3-6x daily. I can’t give you a direct comparison of tincture vs powder for a lot of reasons. With a powder, it is going to go through the stomach, with a tincture, if taken straight and not in water, it will tend to go more directly into the blood stream, so you don’t usually need as much tincture, if not consumed in water or other liquid, as you will a powder. The problems of comparison escalate from there.
Stephen

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

    Stephen,
I have five of your books, and find the cytokine information in Healing Lyme very helpful.

When I bring my Pharmasan ‘Comprehensive Cytokine Analyses’ report to my docs (modern or holistic), they state that they don’t know what to do with the info.

The report lists ‘stimulated IL-6, IL-8, and IL-17 as ‘high’. Most others are ‘elevated’.
Unstimulated, only IL-8 and MIP-iB are ‘elevated’

I couldn’t find IP-17 mentioned in your books. Do the three levels together have significance?

My most recent tests show C.pneumoniae IgG at 1:128; and M.Pneumoniae IgG at 129; IgM-P23, and IgG-P41 as ‘present’; and lastly IgE-332 (3x normal)

    Thanks, Steve

Steve, that is a fantastic question! Please report back with what you learn from an immunologist. Thanks!

I’m a little confused by Stephen’s comment above. He says he’s “not a fan of using this in capsules”. Since the questioner was asking about powder and not capsules, I’m not sure whether to infer that powder, whether it’s in capsules or powder mixed with liquid, is not as effective as tincture; or that powder is better when it’s not in capsules; or whether one should just stick to tinctures where available. Anybody?

    Hi Elizabeth,
It sounds to me like Stephen is saying he prefers tinctures for this particular herb because it is more effective. However, if you choose to use powder form, the dose he recommends is 1 tsp of the powder 3-6x daily. Hope this clarifies it for you.

    Dear Stephen,
I am writing you from Germany and I am hoping for a hint on what herbs might be helping against Mycoplasma hominis & Urealplasma urealyticum. I have tried all antibiotic therapies and I am left with urethral pain and vaginal dysbiosis.
Any idea you might have is highly appreciated.
I have tried Cryptolepis so far and Bidens. However the alcohol in the tincture is causing me stomach pain. Is it in general possible to add hot water so the alcohol becomes gaseous before intake? Thank you so much, God bless you.

    Hi Claudia,
As noted on our website, the lyme Q + A with Stephen Buhner has been closed down for several years. I keep the site up for readers to access past archives and communicate here in the comments. Both of the bacteria you mention are covered in his Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections: Complimentary and Holistic Treatments for Bartonella and Mycoplasma book. I recommend getting the book and also check in our archives to see if past Q + As have addressed either bacteria. You can also try contacting Stephen through his website: https://www.stephenharrodbuhner.com/contact/ Best, Julie
