Dear Stephen,
Do we know for certain that grapefruit seed extract does not have systemic absorption, or is there just not enough research about that? Do you think that grapefruit seed extract really has toxic quarternary ammonium compounds? Best regards.
Stephen’s response:
I go into this in some depth in the newest edition of Herbal Antibiotics (due out in June). From my research ALL GSE products do indeed seem to contain chemicals that I cannot in good conscience recommend people take. The plant itself IS antibacterial but the commercial products are, in my opinion, adulterated. There is going to be some systemic absorption but I haven’t spent enough time on it to find out just how much. Looking at grapefruit itself, without the additives, it just isn’t potent enough or systemic enough to make it through my filters. And yes, it is helpful for many people.

Stephen Harrod Buhner was an Earth poet and an award-winning author of twenty-four books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine including the acclaimed book Healing Lyme: Natural Healing & Prevention of Lyme Borreliosis & Its Co-infections.
Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.
Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.
He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

I’m not clear on the answer, and I’d really like to understand because I started GSE a month ago at my LLMD’s request. Is Stephen saying that he can’t recommend GSE because it’s not potent enough (too adulterated to be abx) or because it’s in some way toxic?
I was just reading information today that nano-particle colloidal silver is supposedly the best natural antibiotic for eradicating mycoplasmas, which underlie many auto-immune diseases. What do you think of using that, any experience with it?
I just started taking colloidal silver…one drop a day…but not on the 2 days that I take Artemisinin …starting to notice more shifts. Killed 6 co-infections before going full throttle with attacking Lymes and Babesia. According to muscle testing with my practitioner I have killed 80% Babesia and 30% Lymes…keep trucking!
I worked as a pharmaceutical chemist for 25 years before switching to holistic protocols for myself and friends (and animals). I have researched in depth the claims that GSE is adulterated with other chemicals (triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride).
While some brands may be so adulterated, there is no evidence for the Citricidal (Nutribiotic) brand. They test each batch (third party independent evaluation) and never find such chemicals. Some of the so-called research I saw demonstrating adulteration is quite frankly laughable. I suspect it may be in part motivated by Big Pharma. I have used GSE successfully since 1991 for a wide spectrum of challenges, including ehrlichiosis.
It’s not LYMES it’s LYME
Focus on the positive Leona.
I agree absolutely, but every time I read someone use Lyme’s instead of Lyme (itself a real misnomer we would be better off without at this point, right?) I question the person’s information because if you are a careful reader and have done a decent amount of reading, you might have noticed this? Of course we mostly all have cognitive issues. Feeling mine today which is why I am online reading. We are so slighteted as a community I always hope for accuracy. Only responding bec. I had a minute, of course not to be petty. Your’s is a good suggestion. Isn’t this a most wonderful website that Julie crated?
So your saying lyme is curable? As all the places I’ve called and doctors I’ve seen alway it’s not… sure would like to hear feedback bit this is 8 year old post.
