Smilax removed from protocol

Dear Stephen,
Smilax is suggested for neuroborreliosis in 1st edition, but not even listed in the 2nd edition — is it now out of favor? If not, does it work well for brain fog as well?

Stephen’s response:
After a decade, though some people found it useful, we did not find it as potent for Lyme problems as we had hoped.

  • Stephen Harrod Buhner

Stephen Harrod Buhner was an Earth poet and an award-winning author of twenty-four books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine including the acclaimed book Healing Lyme: Natural Healing & Prevention of Lyme Borreliosis & Its Co-infections.

Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.

Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.

He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

Thank you for asking this question, I have both the prior and most recent book (along with others)of Stephen’s. My doc wants me to keep taking Smilax- I do not find it of particular help and it’s another one I will stop when current supply exhausts- I find much more help with herxing from the Red Root tincture. I am so grateful to have learned tincturing from Stephen-saves me many many bucks.

I also noticed the first edition discusses L arginie, but the second edition.. perhaps i missed it, or was that information edited out?

There are many kinds of Smilax; which one was being recommended? My herbalist thinks it kills spirochetes.

Dr. William Rawls’ book “Unlocking Lyme” says that Red Root tincture is a blood coagulant, so people at risk of blood clots should not take it. Also, he advises it should only be used short-term, and not taken w/coagulant or anti-coagulant drugs.

Smilax is very good, can kill Lyme spirochetes and even NeuroLyme.
It should be used as tea infusion once a day. Burdock root is quite good too. For Lyme Vitamin A and D are critical, start eating raw carrots and fatty fish. Kelp (iodine) is curative if used in proper dosage.

Hey Burdock is good for what specifically? What actions? I use it all the time . in broth and stews
