with Stephen Harrod Buhner, master herbalist
Hello, My son who is 10 and daughter who is almost 8 have been treated for 5 years for lyme with antibiotics. I had taken them off a year ago and just put them on a low dosage of samento. Recently we switched to cumanda after running out of samento. My 10 year old’s symptoms seem to be returning. Ankle pain, knee pain, achilles pain. Is the cat’s claw from Raintree safe for children, and what would the dosage be for my son who weighs 76 pounds? Also, is that enough or should I add other herbs – he has a hard time swallowing pills.
Stephen’s response:
Yes, Rain-tree cat’s claw is safe. The dosage would be half the adult dose. I would highly suggest you use teasel tincture (15 drops 3x daily) for your son’s symptoms, that should clear them up. If not, add knotweed tincture (woodlandessence.com), same dosage range as the teasel.

Dear Stephen,
I am concerned about my 2 year old son who was bitten by a tick about 2 weeks ago. Although I think I removed it within 2 hours, I totally messed up getting it out and crushed it by accident while the mouth parts were still firmly attached.
What is the best thing I can do now to help his immune system naturally as a preventative measure please?
Despite him showing no symptoms, I am aware that this a very critical stage where effective early treatment could prevent the possibility of chronic conditions arising.
I would also like to know if he has been infected with the type of bacteria ect. ticks commonly carry – it is thought possible for the immune system to totally eradicate them or for some types does it always become a case of at best managing them long term? (His immune system seems generally strong, rarely ill and common childhood illnesses have been very mild and passed quickly. We are very careful with his diet, no sugar or refined foods).
I am quite stressed and would really appreciate your help asap :)
Your books look wonderful. I am really grateful to have found them. Silver lining in this situation! Exactly what I want to be learning about right now am i’m really looking forward to reading some.
Thank you, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
I believe Stephen recommends astragalus for new bites. Please see his past columns on recent tick bites (http://planetthrive.com/tag/recent-tick-bite/) for more information and his past columns on children and lyme (http://planetthrive.com/tag/children-and-lyme/) for appropriate dosages.
If you still have questions, please submit your question through the purple “submit a question” button found just under his photo in the upper right of any of his columns. If your question is time sensitive, you might have a quicker response by contacting him directly through his website at http://www.gaianstudies.org.
Best of luck! Julie
