Muscle and nerve spasms

by | Nov 2, 2012 | Columns, Healing Lyme, muscle/skeletal/joint, Symptoms | 4 comments

Dear Stephen,
I have had lyme for 9 1/2 years. I’ve tried numerous things to treat it. This past year I started getting tremors in my hands and sometimes voice, and random muscle spasms and nerve firings. The most recent symptom, with no explanation, is muscle spasms in my fingers. I recently had ART muscle testing done and she found erlichia and some bartonella and babesia. The most bothersome symptoms are the muscle and nerve spasms. Is there any herb I can take for these? Thanks.

Stephen’s response:
Yes, these:
1) Lion’s mane tincture: This is the only brand I think decent at this point in time: beneficialbotanicals.com Dosage: ¼-1/2 tsp to 6x daily long term.
2) Chinese skullcap root tincture: elkmountainherbs.com (only source I recommend for this) Dosage: ¼-1/2 tsp 3x daily.
3) American skullcap leaf tincture: Same dosage.
4) Cordyceps capsules: 1stchineseherbs.com Dosage: 3 capsules 2-3x daily) [Note from editor: Click on the 1st Chinese herbs ad on this page or the homepage to get the code for a 10% discount on this one.]
5) Kudzu root tincture: newwayherbs.com Same dosage range.
B-12, 2000 mcg daily can also help.
These herbs will help relieve the damage to the nerves and stop the tremors.

Stephen came from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, was his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.

Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectured yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.

He was a tireless advocate for the reincorporation of the exploratory artist, independent scholar, amateur naturalist, and citizen scientist in American society – especially as a counterweight to the influence of corporate science and technology.

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

Stephen, thank you so much for the detailed suggestions for muscle and nerve spasms associated with stealth microbe infections. Cordyceps and Chinese skullcap are already in the herbal protocol I’ve been taking for 9 months (Vital Plan Restore), which is helping and I understand owes greatly to your research and generosity. But I will try adding one or more of the others. A short course of doxycycline set off Herxing spasms in my hands. They eased significantly when I switched to herbs only, but have not gone away. As a massage therapist, resolving this symptom is especially important. Blessings to you and yours!
