Product of the Month: June 2024

I am excited to share that I finally found a sunscreen product I feel good about wearing! This month, the focus is on Sky and Sol, a company that makes skin-biocompatible tallow sunscreen that is pure enough to eat! Made with seven safe-for-you ingredients and free of fragrances, preservatives, parabens, gluten or any other harmful chemicals that could react negatively to your skin.

Sky and Sol sunscreen avoids the use of highly processed seed oils like soybean, sunflower, and safflower. Seeds oils create damaging free radicals that harm the skin and are found in much of the natural sunscreens available today, causing skin breakouts and rashes, and potentially having skin aging effects. They also refrain from using silicone-based ingredients like triethoxycaprylylsilane or dimethicone, which are often used in both mineral and chemical sunscreens to improve texture. These can result in clogged pores, dry skin, and may even impair the skin’s ability to repair itself.

So what DO they put in their sunscreen? To start with, they use a base of organic tallow, a nutrient-rich fat that is sourced from 100% grass-fed, grass finished Australian cattle. Tallow is packed with vitamins and contains a similar blend of your skin’s natural oils for perfect absorption.

Cold-pressed jojoba oil provides the sunscreen’s signature smoothness and is quite moisturizing. It also stabilizes the non-nano zinc oxide and helps it to last longer. Though jojoba oil is technically a “seed oil,” it is quite stable and doesn’t have any of the toxic properties found in highly processed, unstable oils like sunflower oil.

Non-nano zinc oxide is a naturally occurring mineral known for its incredible sun-protection and skin-healing properties. It physically defends against harmful UVA and UVB rays and does not clog pores or form blackheads, making it ideal for the most sensitive skin types.

The formula also contains olive oil sourced from Spain to deeply nourish and revitalize skin. Rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, it offers a protective barrier that moisturizes and conditions, making it a wonderful choice for all skin types, including the most delicate skin types.

Propolis is known for its antioxidant properties and ability to help heal sun-induced skin damage.

They use sustainably sourced organic beeswax to help form a protective barrier on your skin, locking in moisture and defending against environmental damage.

Organic shea butter — rich, nutrient-dense, and free from harmful contaminants — rounds out the formula to support skin health. A powerhouse of fatty acids and vitamins, it deeply nourishes and moisturizes the skin.

Sky and Sol sunscreen is made using an anti-white cast tech which offers strong UV protection without the embarrassing white residue other mineral sunscreens leave on your skin. Their products do not use chemical UV filters like Oxybenzone or Avobenzone, making them reef safe, tear-free, and eco-friendly.

In addition to a non-toxic ingredient list, Sky and Sol provides long lasting SPF 50 protection, the dermatologist-recommended strength for blocking out 98% of harmful UV rays.

I use it myself and had zero reactivity to the product, and found that it felt nourishing to my skin rather than pore-clogging. Once I rubbed it in, there was no white sheen on my face. Having had skin cancer removed from my face a couple months ago, I feel so very grateful to have found Sky and Sol just in time for the hot Arizona summer!

Julie's life was derailed over twenty years ago when she had a very large organic mercury exposure after she naively used a mouth thermometer to measure the temperature of just-boiled milk while making her very first pizza at home. The mercury instantly expanded into a gas form and exploded out the back of the thermometer right into her face. Unaware that mercury was the third most neurotoxic element on Earth, Julie had no idea she had just received a very high dose of a poisonous substance.

A series of subsequent toxic exposures over the next few years -- to smoke from two fires (including 9/11), toxic mold, lyme disease, and chemical injuries -- caused catastrophic damage to her health. While figuring out how to survive day-to-day, and often minute-to-minute, she created Planet Thrive to help others avoid some of the misdiagnoses and struggles she had experienced.

She has clawed her way over many health mountains to get to where she is today. She is excited to bring the latest iteration of Planet Thrive to the chronic illness community.

In 2019, Julie published her very first cookbook e-book called Low Lectin Lunches (+ Dinners, Too!) after discovering how a low lectin, gluten free diet was helping manage her chronic fascia/muscle pain.
