Frontal head pressure and tightness

by | Oct 31, 2012 | Columns, Healing Lyme, migraines, Symptoms | 31 comments

Dear Stephen,
I’m being treated for lyme, bartonella, mycoplasma, babesiosis and toxic mold. I can’t seem to relieve one problematic symptom with oral and IV antibiotics, antifungals or antimalarials (Mepron). I have constant frontal head pressure and tightness from temple to temple, through the eyebrows and into the forehead. It feels like I’m in a daze and wearing a tight hat, helmet, or band around my head. Nothing has relieved this sensation and the symptoms are constant 24/7. Might you have a suggestion on how to treat this stubborn symptom with your herbal protocol? Many thanks.
Stephen’s response:
Try lion’s mane tincture. This is the only brand I think decent at this point in time: beneficialbotanicals.com. Dosage: ¼-1/2 tsp to 6x daily long term.
That is where I would start, next I would try, in order:
Indian pipe tincture: 1/2 tsp as needed
Coral root tincture: (only source I recommend for this) 1/4-1/2 tsp to 6x daily
Peach leaf tincture can also work: 10 -30 drops 3x daily
If you use Chinese skullcap tincture daily (and cordyceps capsules along with it) it will act to stop the headaches permanently: (only source I recommend for this) ¼-1/2 tsp 3x daily
Cordyceps capsules: 3 capsules 2-3x daily [Note from editor: Click on the 1st Chinese herbs ad on this page or the homepage to get the code for a 10% discount on this one.]

Let me know how it works after a few months.

Stephen

This protocol was incredible. After only a few weeks most of my symptoms were gone. After six months all my symptoms were gone… it has given me my life back.

This in response to the question regarding constant frontal head pressure and tightness. I too have lLyme and coinfection’s and have had persistent pressure like frontal headaches that last 24/7 for the past 16 months. Approximately six months ago I was finally given the diagnosis of NDPH ( New daily persistent headache). The diagnosis sounds somewhat benign but unfortunately it is not. It is one of the most difficult headache categories to treat often refractory to all medications and procedures. I have tried every possible medication and herb as well as Sheno Palatine ganglion and occipital nerve blocks to no avail. Your headache sounds very similar to mine. I suggest you see a headache specialist who is familiar with the diagnosis.

My 9 year old son has had the same headache every day for 2 years since coming down with Bartonella and lyme. We have tried all kinds of abx, herbs, gluten free diet, turmeric, and vitamin supplements. We have done cranial therapy with an osteopath and with no success. We go to a social worker to help him deal with the chronic pain. I don’t know how long this can go on. An MRI revealed a cyst on his brain but 3 neuros looked at it and found it to be insignificant. He has had many EEG’s and they are all irregular, however, he is not having actual seizures. Just spiking.
Currently the herbs he is on are : A-BART, MyCOregen and A-BIO and CLA-k.

Have any of you found any relief since your posts? I am desperate to help my little boy. Thanks, Marilyn

Are there any updates on treatment for head pressure? The pressure is more on the top of my head. ALso my ears are plugged much of the time.

Surprised to find this thread still going. My head pressure started as small brain shocks that progressed to waves of pressure (almost like my head was being blown around inside my skull) that now just feels like my head is in a vice. Pain, strangely does not accompany the pressure however. The “tight cap” metaphor is a good one. I’ve read a lot of forums that seem to point to Babesia as the culprit to these types of sensations. I’ve taken all the herbs in Buhner’s protocol and they don’t seem to be making much of a difference though. Also have tried the Lion’s Mane tincture. Curious to hear from others about this.

Did anyone ever find anything that works? This is a symptom that seems to be the most stubborn and quite devastating. I am just starting the protocol. I have had head pressure and pain for a year now 24/7 behind the eyes. I have a positive lyme test. Maybe it is Bart or Babesia. Ideas to try in addition to skullcap/cordyceps/lion’s mane are as follows: wood betony/motherwort combo, CBD oil, Kudzu root (this could be helpful) and other things like magnesium or melatonin. The problem is that we don’t know what infection (if any causes it and what the biochemical/mechanical mechanism is that is causing it- neurotransmitters, toxins, vascular, muscular, inflammation, etc…… I would love to hear Buhner’s actual idea to the reason…..

Hi, for me the wort symptom has been migraine. I am just starting my healing journey (just ordered the book) as I got diagnosed last week. Would love to hear about migraine relief.

  10. David

Mr. Buhner, NDPH is a devastating ailment and was hoping for some updated information on it please. It usually occurs after an infection or stress or surgery and does not end once it begins. Hope someone sees this who works with Buhner. Thanks

    Hi David,
By NDPH do you mean New Daily Persistent Headache? I do not recall Stephen ever writing about this condition but you can search the archives for headaches and migraines: https://buhnerhealinglyme.com/category/symptoms/migraines/. The Q & A is now closed to new questions but you can try writing to Stephen through his website at stephen@gaianstudies.org. Best, Julie

  12. Susan

Has ANYONE tried the CCSVI procedure for this constant “head pressure and tightness. I have been reading that ONLY THIS will greatly help with the problem.

  13. healing lyme admin

    What does CCSVI stand for?

  14. Lori

I have done the Buhner protocol and it was/is a lifesaver. The headaches were crushingly debilitating. Detoxing is critical. Coffee enemas, minimal visual stimulation (no tv or news), lymph massage, vitamin c, did a world of wonders.

  15. Lu

Lori, how long have you been headache free now? I’m wondering why reducing the visual stimulation??

My son, who has autoimmune encephalitis/PANS, Lyme, babesia, has this 24/7 headache as his most debilitating symptom now for years, resistant to all treatments we’ve tried (not doing Buhner yet). He also has intrusive thoughts, and uses video games and youtube videos to keep them away. So how important do you think was the minimal visual stimulation — and do you think it was the visual, or the emotional impact?? Cause you get visual stimulation going for a walk, reading, etc. And how long did you do it for?

  16. sapora

I have babesia and Lyme and have been on Buhner protocol for 3 years. I still have daily severe headaches. Has anyone looked into Red Sage also called Shu Di Huang for treating headaches? I’m thinking I will give it a try as it is similar to treating vascular problems and altitude sickness headaches.

  17. Ariel

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in hot or cold tea before bed (or sipped throughout the day) has helped me some (reduces inflammation and keeps your pH level more neutral). Also, supporting my organs and detoxing my blood with a kinesiologist who uses Standard Process supplements. I still have head pressure, but this helped alleviate some of the pain in the very beginning when it was at its worst.

  18. PEG

Yes Enliv’n homeopathic treatment . Amazing.
I told many other and their lives came back pain gone. I just got bit again will be taking this 7 day tablet. Lyme is an epidemics..silent.
Take Natural calm magnesium till you can push lyme out. Matt wood Teasel root has helped.

  19. Susan O

    Susan,
What does cloudy urine w/ the first void indicate? An infection?

  20. Anne

Where do you get this treatment?

  21. Mike D

Has anyone tried monolaurin? I have been using it for a week and it reduced my head and ear pressure down almost nothing. I have been taking monolaurin with bromelain. The first 3 days were terrible. I think it was a her, but once I got through that I felt great!

  22. Bruce

Maybe the kind of visual is most important. Tv, phone and video`s expose you to emf`s, a increasing problem with today`s tech. 2018 cars are crazy high in emf

  23. kim

Can you please tell me if lions mane is to be avoided if one has mold, and lyme? I heard that the fungus could be a problem if one has mold. Thank you!

  24. Pamela

Keep in mind that magnesium levels are depleted rapidly when we are under stress, physically or otherwise. Every bioresonance scan I’ve had indicates low magnesium. I’ve experienced quite a bit of cranial pressure and also difficulty swallowing which must be related. When I take magnesium every day these symptoms are greatly alleviated. I try to get close to 1000mg of mag malate or citrate a day, divided in two doses. I hear the threonate is an excellent form as well but I cannot weigh in because I haven’t tried it. Magnesium relaxes the muscles and relieves stress and anxiety and is used for countless functions in the body. With chronic illness, I believe it’s a must.

  25. Florian J

    Hi Lu and everyone.
You want to avoid over stimulation in general son that you keep any forms of stress away. Otherwise metabolism will decrease and you’ll lower healing proccess. In some conditions (like the one I was in 1 year ago, systemic and deep
bartonella and mycoplasma infection) you’ll never recover and just surf down that highway to hell. I learned to listen to that “keep calm and just don’t do anything but relax” message my body is telling me from that healing journey. As a kid and until one year ago I just kept on shutting that voice and it might have get me in this chronic condition in the first place. Meditation and mindfulness is the key. TV , video games and smartphone screens and even radio with too much information are the worst. You people will find a way to get the most out of your life. Just believe and be patient.

Hi Sam, I have also been diagnosed with New Daily Persistent Headache, which, as you know, Lyme is a common cause. It is because of this diagnosis I was finally diagnosed with Lyme. While I am currently on a multi-therapy approach with many of the protocol herbs, I think the one thing that has helped me the most is botox injections. It was only after the third treatment did I feel better, although I know I will likely never be 100% better. I feel like the Lyme protocol is starting to help, and I am hoping that one day I will be in remission. I hope this is helpful for anyone else who has been diagnosed with NDPH- I know it is such a rare disease that it is hard to find much help for it.

  27. Natalie

Devil’s claw helps with the severe pressure sensation in my head. I was diagnosed with Lyme, Batonella and Babesia back in 2011. I’m so sick of dealing with this.

  28. Matthew Poggie

My 25 year old son has been suffering with this 24/7 head/facial pressure for 9 months now. He just had a 5day 1000mg/day Solumedrol steroid IV administered over 1 hour. It is a published treatment for NDPH. Unfortuneately it did not relieve his pain. He has also had several nerve blocks and an SPG block that did not help. We will perhaps give Botox a try based on one positive experience mentioned above. Was hoping to tell you all what has worked for him in this regard but we have yet to find a solution. I have a bottle of lion’s mane tincture to try as well.

Any other ideas out there ?… thanks…

  29. John

    What other symptoms?

  30. Samantha

We are all energetic beings. While the energetics of the herbals and allopathic medicines work on the inside, we often do not treat the other parts of our Being.
Please consider looking into Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine for headaches and migraines. It is simple and effective. This was the final key that gave me relief. Blessings in health.
